One Hundred Nails (Centochiodi) One Hundred Nails (Centochiodi) has been declared by Director Ermanno Olmi, remembered for his 1978 masterpiece The Tree of Wooden Clogs (L'albero degli zoccoli) to be his last fiction feature. In this film he tells the story of a young philosophy professor, who decides to completely abandon the intellectual life, and he does so with a powerful symbol of rebellion: he in effect "crucifies" 100 irreplaceable volumes in the university library by driving nails like the ones used to hammer Jesus onto the cross! Pursued by the authorities, he leaves the scene and takes refuge along the banks of the Po River, where he encounters the inhabitants of a nearby town. For them he appears as a kind of Christ-like figure, and he, in turn comes to discover the pleasures of a simple life in a community that welcomes him and generously helps him. Realistically, what could be expected to be the outcome of his past act and his re-emergence in this new community? Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival, nominated for four David di Donatello awards (Italian equivalent of the Academy Award), including for Best Director, Best Film, Best Producer, and Best Screenplay.
